can the progress of a restore be viewed?

When you have started the restore job, under the Job Monitor tab you should see your restore job and a column Percent Complete which will show you. I am not aware of anywhere else that can be viewed in more detail (I pressume you want what files are restored and which are still pending) unless you can get any useful info from the Job Log.
