I have just installed win xp pro on a new seagate 80gig drive and all went ok, I then connected the old maxtor win me 60gig drive so that i can copy some info across and then re-format it, but i cant see it in the gui i can see it in the bios and in disk manager although it only shows as a 38 gig basic unallocated. any suggestions would be appreciated.

You need to set your new drive as the master. Set the old one to slave. This is done using jumpers on the drives. There should be info listed on each drive to show you what to set.

Ok Thanks i will try and play about with the jumpers, although the BIOS picks it up as a slave

Ever used overlay software on the old drive? (If so, you have a problem!). If no overlay, I'd defeintely try disconnecting and reconnecting it (as secondary master as well as primary slave) to see if XP makes a better job of recognising it.

can you read old drive booting from a 98/ME boot floppy?

will it still boot ME (if master/first boot device)?

If so - is XP on fat32 or ntfs? If ntfs - have you a copy of partition magic (so you can shrink partition and create a fat32 one that you can copy ME stuff to FROM ME)?

What about recovery console?
Using the SET command to give full access to filestore

Did you previously use a program called GoBack on the 60GB drive?

Thanks all for your help, I sorted it in the end by doing some research, I think the main problem was that this was an Evesham pc with a program called "go back" installed from the factory, and it just didnt agree with what I was trying to do! I have built many pc`s and never come across this problem before of hanging a hard off of a free IDE Channel and veiwing the files,so maybe we can all learn a lesson here! check the sofware on the old hard drive before installing the new and trying to run them both together, if the old has a program called "GO BACK" then beware, remove go back before doing anything else then hopefully you should be able to hang the old hard off of any IDE channel and view the files in my computer and copy what you want, and then do what needs to be done with the old drive.
