I am on a Windows 98 SE PC with Microsoft Office 2000 Professional SP-3, Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 SP1, Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1123.

I did some PC maintenance and cleaning on Sunday. I uninstalled some old programs. Then I did a ScanDisk and Defrag. I regularly run Norton anti-virus, AdAware, SpyBot, and SpyBlaster.

Now when I open Outlook I get the following error: An OLE registration error occurred. The program is not correctly installed. Run setup again for the program.

I ran System File Checker and there are no corrupt files.

I have gone to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, clicked on Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional, tried Repair and Reinstall. Both get so far and then they just lock up. I do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete and it says "Not Responding" so I have to End Task.

I ran the Inbox Repair Tool. It ran fine until I clicked the Repair button and it locked up ... "Not Responding".

I tried renaming the outcmd.dat file but still couldn't open Outlook.

I tried renaming the extend.dat file but still couldn't open Outlook.

I tried running the program with the /safe switch but still couldn't open Outlook.

I tried running the program with the /cleanviews switch but still couldn't open Outlook.

I tried moving my .pst file somewhere else and opened Outlook. It let me create a new .pst file but still couldn't open Outlook.

I also can't post to newsgroups in Outlook Express because of the problems with Outlook.

If I totally uninstall Office, will I lose everything in Outlook? If I copy the outlook.pst file is that all I need to save all of my information in Outlook?

I guess I shouldn't uninstall things. If it ain't broke don't fix it .... right? Well, it's broke now.

Please help me someone!

You did just about anything, except repair or re-install Outlook ...
Copy th PST if you want to make sure and repair Outlook, forget the rest, that is a waste of time at this point.

Marc,

I DID try to do a Repair ... it locked up ... Not Responding.
I DID try to do a Reinstall ... it locked up ... Not Responding.

So what should I try to do?

Debbie

well . uninstall ? and re-install?
Surely something more deeply went wrong, so you better backup data and reinistall the entire PC.
It will take you less time in the end.

I finally got it fixed.

I tried the "Add or Remove Features" and clicked on "Not Available" and that uninstalled Outlook. I then went into that same place and clicked on "Run from my computer" and it installed Outlook. I don't know why it worked but it did.

I also finally got the pst file repaired.

All is good again ... without reinstalling the entire PC.
