Can subreports print in same layout as the report

I'm designing a report with four columns per page. In the report footer, I'm trying to use an unbound subreport and have it print in the same 4 column format, but everytime I preview, the subreport is always formatted one column per page. I've tried formatting the subreport exactly the same as the main report with no success. Does anyone have any ideas on how this is done?
