Hello friends, Just recently I upgraded from a Duron 1200, 256-32 shared video=224 Ram, running win '98, to a intel Celeron 2.4, 512 Ram, running XP SP2, it runs good, but ever since it was set up, I have not been able to use Outlook Express 6.0.

When I go into OE 6.0, I send/receive, and I always get this same error from outlook express,

"Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: 'Jason', Server: 'pophm.sympatico.ca', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR command not implemented', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18"

I've used xp's "help & support," trouble shooting OE exaustively, spent over an hour on the phone with my ISP confirming all the server info is right, and I still get the same error... Can anyone help? My firewall and anti-virus, is Norton security, but I did try OE with NIS disabled, but then again I don't like using OE without NIS.....

Upgraded? How - I hope not by moving hard drive from old to new machine (because that will likely cause problems due to drivers).

Basically we need more information. How did you set new machine up? Is internet working (even though OE isn't). Have you tried another email client (eg popcorn).

btw - IMO, Norton security/antivirus etc is the biggest pile of bloat going. Takes up FAR too much of your machine resources. AVG is free for personal use and is much slimmer (and does at leat as good an anti-virus job). XP has a perfectly serviceable firewall. Anti-Spyware more problematic (nothing gets them all) - MS anti-spyware good free real time protection (at least till end of year) and spybot/adaware good additional scan tools.

What sort of Internet connection have you?

As previously asked have you any Internet access?

This comes to mind if you are on Dial-up, in the ISP Properties under Security it talks about the following - "Lists the available identity authentication settings that you can use. On a dial-up connection, these range from an unsecured password to smart card authentication. On a VPN connection, the authentication settings range from a required secured password to smart card authentication."

If you are Dial-up make sure you are using "Allow unsecured password" to connect to any ISP.

Hola,

go to your account in OE that you named above as Jason...

then go to Extended (I am sorry can't exactly tell you how it is called in English as I am using a Foreign Version of XP), there you will find two check boxes that state something like 'Server needs a Secure Connection (SSL)' both for the POP3 In- and Outgoing Servers... Make sure the Check Marks Boxes are empty/off...

this should take care of your problem...

I guess calling it an upgrade is not accurate,

New CPU, Ram, 80 Gig HDD, different case tower, so new computer.....

No need to try a different web-based email, I can use the server, and yes I can surf the net, OE 6 is just so integrated with XP, and emailing is a big part of what I do and using OE would give me so many more options!

Yes, I know that Norton is a hog! I use Norton internet security (NIS), so it includes the Norton firewall, anti-virus and anti-spam filter, which is off, does no good without OE working.... I know that I could use the windows firewall, AVG free, and I have windows auto update enabled anyway, and I might do this when the free NIS subscription runs out at the end of September, but I do admit that I like the real-time protection that NIS provides, but I might not need this, my surfing is pretty-clean. I mean I do have MS anti-spyware and adaware, and with all the security features that sp2 gives IE.

BBigBen, I tried what you suggested and just about all things else, my server info is confirmed correct by my ISP!

My connection is DSL.

@Jason1974 - My ISP did the same... They confirmed that the stuff I entered was also correct, but it wasn't... Member Linney, pointed you to some good info on the subject... here is one of them that clarifies the points I tried to make, basically a step for step way to do it:
Check it out, oh, btw. this has nothing to do with it being DSL, but a darn wrong configuration that is all...
