Can someone please explain an IP classes problem im having?

i do not understand

Network classes are:
Class-A = 0xxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx
Class-B = 10xxxxxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx
Class-C = 110xxxxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx

Can someone please explain why each class has those bits shown? all i know is they are the most significant bits but i do not know what they are used for.

I guess, a "0" at the start of the first octet means all the addresses will not have 128 on - ie, all 1st-octets will be 0. (00000000) to 127. (01111111).
Class B do have 128 on in the first octet, so they will be at least 128., but with the second most significant bit off, they will not have 64. So 128. (1000000) to 191. (10111111)
Class C has both 128 & 64 on, so will be at least 192.

I think all the textbooks still pretend you have to learn what classes are, just like they all demonstrate VLANs as a means to functionally separate your users at Layer2, which is an even stupider idea.
