can somebody explain 10gIAS connections

We have a 10g database set up for shared server connections. What actually happens when a user connects to the database through a 10g application server? Does the app server make a dedicated connection to the db and then share that dedicated connection with other app server users? Does the app server make a dedicated connection to the db for each user? Can somebody give me an idea how the app server handles connections?

any info would be appreciated.
