Can Shrepoint Index?

Hi all,
I am new to Sharepoint and would like to know if Sharepoint can be used to Index Folders residing on a different server and a search tool can be used on a team's page to look for a folder?

Can this feature be done with WSS or WSPS (Windows SharePoint Portal Services?

Oh actually, only Sharepoint Portal Server will be able to index external sources. Sharepoint Services will only search within its site.

... Now what puzzles me is if Sharepoint Portal can be used to search for folders, not part of any Sharepoint sites, residing on other servers?

yep. you should be able to find instructions on how to do that with microsoft documentation.
