Hello, all

I have a exchange 5.5 server here. From a client machine i can receive emails from outside fine. ex: from gmail. But i cannot send emails outside to ex:gmail, aol etc... But if i send an email to myself i would get the email.(local to local)

Anyone know what the problem is or what i should double check.

Thanks
Laura

Hey, just a shot in the dark... but have you restarted the pop3 and IMAP4 services on the server? Also, check for connectivity... Is the DNS on the exchange server correct? can you talk to things out side the orgnization? Ie ping from the exchange server? just some thoughts.

Thanks, it works now. I restarted all services related to exchange. Not sure why that worked though. It was a server that i haven't booted in awhile. So i booted it up to test. After bootup i wasnt able to send. DNS seemed fine i was able to ping websites etc.

So not sure how that restart of services worked. Since the server was just booted up.

Thanks again!

Hard to say, could be a conflict with other services that were started at the same time... check out process explorer by sysinternals, its saved my but a few times. It tells you what process is eating the processor...Hard disks, and memory... you should use it in conjuction with performance monitor. For instance, I had a problem the other week where the real time virus scan was runing during business hours, I could see that the disk was taxed out 100%. The rtvs.exe process would pop up around the 60% processor utilization every few seconds. seemed a little fishey so I killed the process and sure enough disk processing came back down and everyone stopped complaining about slow exchange response. hope that this was helpful. good luck!
