okay I'm baffled. I'm completed an OS upgrade to a simple 15 node LAN. On the clients just loaded with the Win2000 upgrade, I can't access sites from the browser .

I *can* however ping to and from each client (ex: 'ping pc03'), and ping outside my LAN (ex: ping 'yahoo.com'). The only difference in the 'ipconfig /all' screens is that Node Type says 'Broadcast' (versus 'hybrid' on the PCs that seem to be working) (vendor's router handles DNS and DHCP)

QUESTION: how/where is Node Type set? If that doesn't relate to the problem, what else should I check?

Sounds like a DNS problem to me. Had that same problem after installing a router - it couldn't communicate with any DNS servers I entered, and couldn't find one automatically from my ISP either. Wasn't able to solve the problem and went back to using my hub.

When you ping an internet site like from the command line, does it resolve the DNS and get the correct IP address? Can you then ping that IP address?

If so, is your browser set up correctly? Are you using a proxy server or not?

Chris.

RESOLVED: do *not* select "using proxy server" in the browswer configuration options.

FYI on previous replies:
- Yes, I could successfully ping from CLI (command line interface). just couldn't go to from the browser. I could even go to ftp sites from the brower.

- Yes, sounded like a DNS issue to me also. But I could resolve from CLI (ex: yahoo.com returned 66.218.71.113).

So the answer: the MS IE setting (Tools, Internet Options, Connection, Lan Settings) to "use proxy server" was causing a problem b/c our ISP doesn't use a proxy server. FTP from the browser worked supposedly b/c unlike http, ftp doesn't look for proxy settings.

whew... networks man, i tell ya :)

thanks all!
