can ping the website name but cannot surf !

Hardware :

Laptop with WIN XP pro and a netgear wireless PCMCIA card
connects to a WIN XP pro desktop with netgear usb antenna and a UTP cable connection to a watchguard soho firewall => cable modem

Problem :

The desktop works properly but the laptop can only ping internetsites but cannot surf the web under internet explorer (DNS resolving works)proxy server on or porxy server makes no difference ?

what can be wrong ?
 
Check the firewall settings. It might be set to allow incoming pings but not web requests.

Try disabling the firewalls on both machines.

goto start>settings>network settings>

Right click on your network connection and goto props. On the tab to your far right, you'll see the option to disable the firewall.
 
If you are referring to proxy server in IE Internet Options, then yes it does make a difference. Check your desktop settings. See what proxy settings are set for there and match the laptop settings. Otherwise try using Netscape or some other browser.
 
You are trying an Ad Hoc wireless connection, and not enabling ICS or bridging.

You are expecting the wireless adapter with the rj-45 adapter connection to the broadband modem to give you internet access. This is not an automatic function.
