I have two desktops connected to a cable modem through a linksys router. Both worked fine last week. Today, one PC can ping the router but not ping or surf the web. The second PC can ping the first one and get to the www. Both are setup with static IP addresses, both have the same DNS entries. What should be the first thing or two I try?

Many thanks to all.

Just a few quick suggestions:

-Check for loose cables.

-Connect to the router's administration page and see if it has a WAN side address. If so, see if you can ping any other machine on that subnet. If you can, it may well be an ISP issue.

-Bounce the LinkSys. I have one at home and every few months it seizes up on me.

I hope this helps. I'm sure someone else will have more suggestions.

I replaced the cable, no help.

I could not connect to the Linksys admin page on PC number 1 ( but could on the one that works ). I can ping the LInksys but not browse to it using IE or Opera.

By "bounce" I assume you mean turn off and on again - I'll try that.

Could browse the LAN and get to other drives on other PCs. Could not surf at all. Could not get to the router. Ran good old WinSockFix and all is well again. I guess I should have done that first. Thanks for your help and attention.

Problem: I had two PC on our segment that could ping nodes on the local network but could not surf the web. I have checked the firewall, routing config as well as the browser settings and security and have set them back to default but the problem persisted, I had also uninstalled the network adapter and reintalled it but still no comm. After all this I even downloaded all the IE browser libraries and cabs [this is another FAQ Q&A] and re-installed and nothing.

Solution: I went to Run > regedit > and deleted the following

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

Then...

Restarted the computer
Went to Network Connections
Right click and select Properties
Clicked on the Install button
Selected Protocol
Clicked on the Add button
Clicked on the Have Disk button
Went to the \Windows\inf directory
Brouse and click Open
Highlighted Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Clicked on the OK button
Checked to see if the network adapter obtained a new IP lease and if not...
Rebooted

That fixed the problem!!
