I have 2 PC (ASUS and Gigabyte motberboard), Windows 2000 Pro installed on both. They both have onboard LAN. I've connected the 2 with a cross over cable. TCP/IP and NetBIOS are installed on both. TCP/IP is set up with static IP addresses, 172.18.50.1 and 172.18.50.2.

I can browse using NetBIOS (hostnames) on both PCs. However, when it comes to pinging, I can only ping from one PC, but not from the other, ie, the ASUS can ping the Gigabyte, but not the inverse.

Please advise.

You may have a couple things.
1) Some sort of firewall on the offending PC that is blocking PING responses.
2) The NIC is configured in a mode (broadcast, hybrid, etc.) that does not allow PING ack's... which is a pretty "out there" theory.

Hey, thanks. I was having a similar problem(would've figured it out anyway) but thinks for pointing me in the right direction. I had a firewall on. :)

thedaver,

I had a firewall (PCCilling2002) on! Yeah! Thanks! Finally, the world of LAN games opens before me! :)
