Can ping but can not retrieve web pages

I have a Windows 2000 server that can ping any IP address but it can not pull up a web page and can not be controlled remotely by VNC.

The server is connected to a DSL Router. The small network is using NAT. The server IP address is 192.168.0.2 in the DNS network configuration I am using 192.168.0.2 as the primary DNS server and Bellsouth DNS address as the backup. In the DNS server configuration for the server I have deleted the “.” Already, and am using forwarders. Also when I run a test on the recursive query to other servers it fails. W

I just do not understand what could be the problem. If anyone need further info please let me know? Thanks in advance.

So you have your local windows 2000 server and you can ping external and internal IP addresses.

When you say you cannot pull up a webpage, does that mean you cannot open up internet explorer and visit

When you say you cannot be controlled remotely by VNC, you didnt mention by where? From inside your network? If its from outside your network, then you need to configure your DSL for network address translation and connect to your server using the external address, not the internal 192.168.x.x address. Any IP address starting with 192.168.x.x is non routable and is your local private range only. That address doesnt exist on the internet.

Okay, so you want this Windows 2000 box at 192.168.0.2 to be a DNS server?

In the network connection settings, put the DNS settings at only 192.168.0.2 and remove the BellSouth DNS server IP.

Then in the DNS Server settings, for forwarders, put the BellSouth DNS servers IP addresses.

Try restarting the DNS Server service and give it a whirl.

If that doesnt work, then go back to DNS settings and put the bellsouth dns servers as the IP addresses. If this still doesnt work, then I am questioning if you have the correct IP address for the BellSouth DNS servers or you possibly have a firewall blocking outbound DNS requests to them.

I have other computers behind the NAT that are using the Bellsouth DNS servers and they are working fine.

I can ping anything and it will reply. But if I try to pull up a webpage by IP address or name it will not work. I cannot get into my local router by 192.168.0.1 from this PC, but I can from the others. I can ping this pc from the others with no problem.

Is there a service that I can restart, did a dll get damage?
I have never seen such

Use the pathping command, pathping "your ISPs DNS server IP" . You should have few if any lost packets.
If you have many lost packets, chance are this is the cause, as ping (ICMP) will be allowed through most router...
Worst case, your ISPs DNS servers are unreachable for DNS queries due to a router in between you and the ISPs DNS servers, use another ISPs DNS servers, such as Road Runner's as a test, after adjusting your router's MTU size, if necessary.

Check the MTU setting for your router with TCP Optimizer...

A router along the way may be dropping packets due to their size. Correct it at the router.

The pathping worked on the PC it was able to make all the way to the DNS. It was very slow and not as fast as the rest of the PCs but it did make it. The is a wireless dlink router and as I said before all the other pcs are going through this router and they are working fine. This PC still is not able to open any webpages.

I figure this one out! Ipsecurity policy was set under network connection. This is located under the advanced tab under tcp/ip. Had to uncheck it and restart the computer.
