when I enabled WEP on my wireless router, it generated 4 keys from a phrase I entered.

From my laptop, I had to enter in one of those 10 digit keys, which is impossible to memorize.

Am I making this too difficult? It seems like all I should have to type in would be a simple password that I make up myself? Isn't there a way to enter a user defined password, rather than have to enter a 10 digit key that is generated for you?

If your router and wireless card support it, use WPA or WPA2 (also called PSK or pre-shared key.) These use an ascii string rather than hex. It is also much more secure.
