Hi,

This problem is really bugging me.

Using my laptop to connect to my wireless router at home I can connect ok. However, when i go to internet it seems i can only access google. This means i can enter a search but as soon as i try to follow a link or access a different site i get site could not be found (ive tried microsoft.com etc).

I can ping the routers ip address and i can ping but no others.

Winxp pro/sp2, IE v6. Also the Firewall is turned off in Security Centre since the router already has firewall built in.

Thanks in advance.

Check your HOSTS file entry.

It will be in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and can be viewed and edited with notepad.

It should look only like:
[tt]
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

[/tt]

If it appears as above, follow the malware cleanup steps discussed in faq608-4650

No my hosts file is as above. Im pretty sure i dont have any malware on my machine.

Any other ideas ?

Then I do think it is a malware issue. A good clean with faq608-4650 is advised, but as a good guess it is a bum LSP entry.

Since your are obviously using SP2 under XP, do a:

Start, Run, netsh winsock reset catalog

And reboot and test.

Let us know how it sorts.

Hi

Ok I got it sorted. Although it wasnt any of the above (albeit the clean did pick out a few things which is good).

On the wireless connection the TCP/IP protocol had a static ipaddress (which was in the correct subnet etc - which was why i could ping the router). So I changed it to Automatic and it worked straight away. I have no idea why !

Thanks for your help.
