My windows xp profession Systemax computer will only start windows when i put it on its side and start to open the box (this shakes it a bit and windows starts).
When started in the vertical position i get the screen with the motherboard name and "press delete to enter setup."

What kind of things can be wrong?

My guess would be a loose cable. Open the side of the case and ensure all cables are connected firmly.

Check with systemmax to see if the machine has an intrusion detection device. If not then check for loose cables as electronicsfreak advises. This is most likely the problem. But some of the higher priced custom machines have I D devices.

My guess is the power supply as I had one with exactly these symptoms.

Power supply possible.

Loose wires on CPU fan.

Motor on hard drive is going bad maybe.

Sometimes you can get hard drive problem from the power supply starting to go bad. The power can fluctuate or capaciters can go bad and you just dont get enough power.

Sometimes fans can stick also and not want to start like the fan on the CPU Coller or the Chipset Cooler. If the motherboard senses that it does not work, then maybe it just wont start. It is a kind of built in safety feature on some motherboards.
