I have a dell laptop computer. I have been experiencing problems with getting on to the internet. At first I thought there was a problem with the modem because every time I go to get online the modem would just cut off. So I call Bellsouth and had them send me another one. After trying to get online frantically with the new modem I decided to call Bellsouth for further assistance. After a few hours on the phone with the gentleman, who was very helpful, he help me to discover that I could get online in safe mode, just not in normal mode. I have been told so many different things it is ridiculous. I was told again it was the modem, i need to reinstall the windows operating system, and should do a tcp/ip stack and nothing seems to be working. Is this a one in a million problem or has someone else experienced this? I am working my way to "techno nirvana" but this was a first for me. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

You might want to try and download a couple of useful tools to make sure you have a clean computer.
Adaware SE by lavasoft will look for malware that's hidden on your computer. Also go to trend and run housecalls to see if you have any viruses. If you know of anyone that has Norton utilities CD, borrow it and run a check of your computer. Crowtalks

Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware SE and hijackthis are all free at download.com AVG has free virus scanners as does trendmicro.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Dell, unfortunately always (like gateway and the old packard h*ll) wants you to "format and restore" the fact that you can connect in safe mode tells me that something is conflicting with the modem -- have you looked at the device manager and the system information to see if there are conflicts showing up?

If it was the modem, it wouldn't work in safe mode anymore than it works in regular. Now, you could have a corrupt file from the software installation -- have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem, including completely deleting any sign of it off your system (I hate to say this however....) including the registry? (cringe)

go to add and remove programs and remove the modem file, then to program files in explorer and remove any leftover folders, etc from the modem... then, reboot (actually, shut the system off for 30 seconds to wipe everything out of the RAM) and then boot up and see if your system sees the modem. if so, let it install the software. Don't forget in the network connections, under the modem properties there is a screen you can use to help see if the modem is reacting in "real" mode vs safe mode!

I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed that this helps you!

Hello....dont do anything drasic...probably as emntioned earlier...spyware/virus. I just worked on a PC that could not get on the internet. Could ping internet ip addresses but PC would not accept DNS settings manually or via DHCP. Fought with it and finally removed 700 spyware files...rebooted....internet started working again.

Good Luck
