I have a project in D5 which contains 3rd party components. Some of those components have not been updated to work in D 2007. Is it possible to combine the D5 project with a D 2007 one and compile it?

To find substitute components and workarounds would really be a nightmare [sad].

I think the answer is that some might work, and some might not!
Which is the same as saying that I dont think you will be able to able to avoid a nightmare or at least a bad dream.

The good thing with languages like Delphi is that the add on component system simplifies things, but it can also create problems.

Having said that I haven't used D2007, it might have a project importer/converter [ponder] But I doubt it!
Good luck.

your d5 project will load into d2007 that is of course that the units and components it requires are avaliable.

He's interested in binary compatibility...

I believe that the answer is generally "no". Every version of Delphi updates its object storage format slightly.

What you can do, though, is build a DLL using D5, and link to the DLL with 2007 using the supplied interface. Not perfect, but it might do what you want...
