Hi Web developers,

Most of us use Notepad for some or all of our editing...

As you know, when you open Notepad, it only shows .Txt files; you have to change the Files of Type box to 'All Files' to see your .html and .asp files

This is really inconvenient if you use Notepad alot.

Does anyone know of a way to have Notepad default to the All Files setting ??

Thanks, John

You can change the applications association by doing the following:

In My Computer or Windows Explorer, on the View menu, click Folder Options.
Click the File Types tab.
In the list of file types, click the one you want to change.
Click Edit.
In Actions, click Open.
Click Edit.
In Application used to perform action, enter the program you want to use to open files that have this extension, and then click OK.

Be Aware though if you do the following, the file type will be associated with notepad so if you are developing in say Frontpage, the file will no longer open in front page but in notepad.

Hope this helps,
Rewdee

Rewdee,

If you open up Notepad you will see what my post is about.

My ASP files open in Internet Explorer when I click on them and this is exactly what I want.

I want my Notepad session to automatically show me ALL the files, not just .txt files.

Not an answer to your question, but if you get TextPad, you'll be much happier. It installs an icon on your browser so you can access it and view the page's source with it. It's all color coded with colors you can set yourself. And it's much much much much better (trust me!) for editing code then notepad.

Rick It's a pleasure to know that I've helped you. If I have,

Hi,

I have your solution. I have just edited my notepad program to make it only save as All Files (*.*) so when ever you open or save or save as it will always say All Files (*.*).

Do you want that. Email me if you do, and I'll send you my edited version of notepad. You will want to save your original as a backup if you ever decide you don't like this or don't want this anymore.

Hope this helps! NATE
