We have a fax machine using our digital phone system (MiTEL ICP 200). This fax machine works for years and can send fax locally, can not send long distance fax.

My question is that: is there anything we can do to make this fax machine sending long distance fax?

Two things come to mind.

First, are you sure that it's long distance that is causing the problem, or perhaps just a particular fax machine that you are calling that happens to be long distance. How many different long distance faxes (to different numbers) have you tried? Do they all fail? etc...

Second, if it is truly a long distance issue, it could be because CO's will put in echo cancelers into the path once the distance (and in turn the time delay) reaches a certain point. Fax machines don't behave well when there is an echo canceler in the path. You can however try to adjust the settings on your fax machine to help. Unfortunately it's been a few years since I had to deal with that stuff, so I can't suggest anything concrete (try another protocol if it's supported or increase the redundancy level). Needless to say, half duplex is what you want.

Has it ever been able to send long distance? Is it restricted from dialling long distance?

For this fax machine, all long distance fax can not be sent out. The long distance fax here means that the area code of destination fax number is different from the area code of this fax machine.

For many years this fax machine has never sent any long distance fax (as I know). But this issue came to my attention recently.

For local fax, we dial 3 digital areacode + 7 digital number. For long distance fax, I have tried to dial
1) 3 digital areacode + 7 digital number. and
2) 1 (countrycode) + 3 digital areacode + 7 digital number.
All tries failed.

I think it may not be a distance issue.
I don't know whether it is restricted from dialling long distance. If yes, how to remove this restriction?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Check form 9 COR for Fax extension

If COR is not that of one known to be able to dial LD, then change it to one that can.

OR

Check Form 9 COR for Fax extension

Check Form 20 to see where that cor is a Member of retricted groups

Check form 23 to see which routes use those restricted groups.

Check Form 26 nested digits to determine what digit sequences use what routes

If you find that the FAX is restricted from LD routes then either modify the COR of the FAX or modify the restrictions.

Thanks kwbMitel.
I have checked all these forms, and have no idea how to change it. It seems COR is 2 and 2 can do LD calls. All settings allows LD calls.

Here are our settings:

FORM 26:
LEADING DIGIT/RETURN DIal tune/restricted COR group
9 / YES / unrestircted

digital to be analyzed/QTY to follow/Designation/Term type and num

1XXXXXXXXXX / 0 /LONG DISTANCE/Route 2

FORM 23:
ROUTE NUM/TRUNK GROUP/COR GROUP /MOD DIGIT ENTRY/COMMENTS
02 / 1 / 2 / 1 /ALLOW LD CALLs

FORM 20:
CORGROUP/COR group MEMBERS/COMMENTS
02 /2-25 /ALLOW LD CALLs

FORM 9:
BAY/SLT/CCT/TEN/EXTN/COS/COR/TYPE/page/NAME
2 /02 /02 / 25/850 / 22/ 2 / stn/ /FAx 850

Do you have a Super Console 1000 for the Receptionist at your office?
The SC1000 can restrict the outbound calls by adding restrictions there too.

If you have SC1000, press the Function key, Guest Room (extension of fax) and see if it has LD in the string of the status of the set

INT - internal calls only
LOC - local calls
LD - Long Distance capable

Thanks YnotPhone. We don't have Super Console 1000. But we have SuperSet 4150. I don't see this kind of settings in our Superset 4150.

What I'm Reading from your Post

LD calls go Route 2
Route 2 is assigned to COR Group 2
COR Group 2 is Set to restrict CORs 2-25

If the FAX is COR 2 then it will be restricted.

Either remove COR 2 from Cor Grp 2 (Make it 3-25)

or

Change the COR of the FAX to 1

Thank kwbMitel.

I have changed COR of the fax in FORM 9 from 2 into 1. Then tried to send fax out by try:
1) 3 digital areacode + 7 digital number.
2) 1 (countrycode) + 3 digital areacode + 7 digital number.
3) 9 + 1 (countrycode) + 3 digital areacode + 7 digital number.

All tries failed. But I can still send local fax by using 3 digital areacode + 7 digital number.

Are there other possibilities to limit LD fax? Thanks.

Set a display phone to the same COS and COR as the fax and try to make a call. Observe and report whatever the display says.

Thank kwbMitel very much.

Today I have repeated testings done in last Friday afternoon, but with a different destination fax number. The testing is successful. We are able to send long distance fax by dialing:
2) 1 (countrycode) + 3 digital areacode + 7 digital number.
after COR in FORM 9 is set to 1.

So for my problem, the post of kwbMitel at 7 Sep 12 18:03 is the solution.

My problem has been solved. Thanks kwbMitel again. Thank IrwinMFletcher and YnotPhone for your valuable suggestions.
