Here is what I get when trying to print to PDF from Indesign. No pdf file is ever created.

%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: setdistillerparams; ErrorInfo: CalCMYKProfile U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
Error accessing color profile: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

What happens when you export to pdf from Indesign or print a postscript file for Distiller?

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

It does export to pdf with giving me the same error message (but the file is created and looks fine).

What is printing a postscript file for Distiller? Can that go to a printer?

Does anybody even sent indd files to the printer anymore? PDF sounds like such a good option!

Try going to Edit menu/Color Settings. Uncheck Enable Color Management and see if you get the errors when exporting pdf from ID. It appears your machine cannot find the swop2 cmyk profile or you have a big color mismatch in your document. Diabling color management should bypass teh problem for now, but proper color management is vital for good print output. Unfortunaely it's not something that can be explained in a few paragraphs.

You should learn more about Acrobat and making pdfs. You have Acrobat as that is what enables you to print to pdf. The error message "OffendingCommand: setdistillerparams" shows there's something wrong with your distiller settings. Go to Acrobat and Advanced menu and select Distiller. See what your settings are. The most foolproof is the standard Press.

To print postscript for distiller you go to Print. Select Postscript as the printer and Adobe pdf as the PPD. From there you make all necessary settings, most importantly the color, transparency flattener, image Data. Then print. it will give you a file with the .ps extension. Save that. In Acrobat go to file menu/Create new pdf/From File. Select the .ps file and go. Acrobat will launch Distiller and will make the pdf based on the settings you set in Distiller.
