Hello,

In about 20 days, I will need to configure a 1602 router in a different state. I have been testing with the same model router in my office. I purchased an External US Robotics 56k Fax Modem and thought it would not be that difficult to connect the router.

I have connected a straight through serial cable between my laptop com port and the modem and configured with the init string at&f0qle0s0=1&b0&n6&u6&m4&k0&w and set the dip switches 1,4,6,8 down. After this, I plugged the modem to one end of the straight through serial cable, connected the other end to a 25 - 9 pin adapter and then connected to a gender bender and then to the 9-pin to RJ45 connector that the blue console cable connects to. I dial into the modem, it connects but there is no proof that the modem is communicating with the router.

I have also swapped the straight though cable with a null modem cable and it didn't work either.

Can some one tell me if I need a special cable or need to make a change to the router configuration to allow remote access via modem?

I can connect the console cable to my laptop and access the router ios.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Tommy

Change the dips as well.
dips 1,3,5,8 are up, all others down. I did this and it came right up on the console port.

This router does not have an AUX port so I have to use the console port.

I changed the dips as you suggested but now the modem doesn't establish a connection. Maybe we can compare the dip settings. My modem has the following listed on the bottom label:

1UP-DTR Normal
1DN-DTR Override
2UP-Verbal results codes
2DN-Numeric results codes
3UP-Suppress results codes
3DN-Display results codes
4UP-Echo offline commands
4DN-No Echo offline commands
5UP-Auto answer on
5DN-Auto answer off
6UP-Carrier detect normal
6DN-Carrier detect override
7UP-Load NVRAM defaults
7DN-Load factory defaults
8UP-Dumb mode
8DN-Smart mode

Here is the link I was using before posting:

Just curious, since your setup is working, what type of cable configuration are you using between your modem and the console port?

Thanks,

Tommy

I found the problem. It wasn't the modem. It was the cable configuration I was trying to use. I searched our phone room until I found the CISCO box and there I found the DB25-RJ45 "Modem" adapter and Satin cable. Thanks for the help anyway.

Did your original dips work or did you use the alternate?
just curious..

I used the original dip switches and modem ini string.

I followed the instruction on the cicso page I posted earlier.
