Can not connect to the network

I am running Windows XP Pro. Up till a few days ago I was able to connect to my home network and the internet fine. I connect to my DSL ISP through a lynksys router that I have. I have 2 computers on the router. One computer gets an IP address from the router fine (192...) but the other just has a 169... IP address. I am not able to renew the adapter. I get an error message that an operation was attempted on a device that is not a socket. I cant understand what happended all of a sudden. If I remove the cable from the router the computer displays "cable disconnected." I made no changes to my tcp/ip settings for my Local Area Connection properties, and all the network components are installed such as "Client for MS Networks", "File and Print sharing for MS Networks", and "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)". All of these are the same since I loaded the OS.

I reset the DSL modem and the Router and rebooted the computer. Still nothing... I even tried issuing the computer a static IP address from the router but still nothing. I dont know what else to do. If this may help any, on the ports for the router there are 2 lights for each port. The top light says link/act, and the buttom says 100. The buttom light is not lit up. Could this be my cable is broke in some place or ...... I figured that if the computer could see that I unplugged the cable from the back of the router the cable may be good but I may be wrong. Can anyone help?

Open a Command session (Start>>Run>> type cmd and hit enter)

Type: ping 127.0.0.1
Did you get replies?

Type: ipconfig /all

Your connection lights are only telling you that you are at a 100 mbs duplex setting. If you would manually change the setting to 100 Full duplex all the lights would come on. But this, while a desirable change, is not the problem.

Try running this utility to rebuild your Winsock service stack:

I'm sorry, that last message was slightly garbled. You are at a half duplex setting, so all three lights on the router would not be on until you manually set the adapter to 100 full duplex.

Please try the fix I linked above before worrying about the duplex of the adapter.

this type of problem is related due to filesharing software (amongst other things) cocking up the winsock2 portion of the registry

I have a xp pro machine running on a novell network.My problem is i cant obtain auto DHCP settings from the router>I cant ping the router either.
