can norton and mcafee antivirus co-exist?

Why would you want to run 2 virus scanners on the same computer and use up even more resources, also it would just slow your computer down.
They will just conflict with each other and cause more hassle than its worth.
Reason your email program isnt working is because both scanners have their own email plugins which are most likely conflicting with each other.
Choose 1 scanner and unistall the other.
If you need to do a seperate scan with another scanner for some reason then use an online scanner such as housecall

FaiTHLeSS is absolutely correct, running two different virus scanners will cause you all sorts of problems, in fact, you may find this will stop any viruses actually be detected, as both software packages will conflict, and therefore will not function as normal. Both Norton and Mcafee do the same job, its down to user preference at the end of the day.
Also
If you need to do separate scans there are also some nice little tools to help you keep things nice and clean, for example you are able to download a software package called "Stinger" from Mcafee this is also free. This is not required for McAfee users as McAfee products are capable of detecting and removing the virus with the latest update.
The Stinger will look for any of the latest viruses and clean them from the machine including cleaning the registry area ! The viruses it's able to detect are listed on the actual download page
