In short, for whatever reason, I can no longer burn DVDs using blank DVD+R but instead can only do so using DVD+RW on my laptop. This shouldn’t be the case for two reasons.
First, when ready for burning and I pop in my blank DVD+R, I get a message saying “This disc is not writable. Please insert a writable disc……”
It goes on to say “Disc required for the compilation: DVD+R/RW”
“Disc type in the recorder: DVD+R”
So I take it that what I need is either DVD+R or DVD+RW but obviously the disc that’s in there is DVD+R. That makes no sense.

Secondly and most illogical is that when first started burning, I was using DVD+R!! I still have those movies that I burned using DVD+R but I can no longer do so with DVD+R.

I can’t understand why my laptop is no longer allowing DVD+R for burning. I used to be able to do so with no problem but now it only takes DVD+RW which is a bit more expensive (although rewritable). But I would much prefer to go back to using DVD+R.

I can’t come up with a theory as to why it no longer allows DVD+R. Between the time I first started burning and now, the laptop has crashed a few times and I had to reinstall windows. I also had to get a brand new hard drive. But even before I got a new hard drive, it was already at a point where it was only taking DVD+RW, and no longer DVD+R. Besides, I don’t think having to install windows again or new hard drive should have any effect.

I am hoping that someone can figure out why this is the case and would like to know how I can go back to using DVD+R for burning instead of DVD+RW.

Thanks in advance.

Please provide the make/model of the DVD burner and the software name/version you are using to make DVDs.

Things to try:

1) Change the brand of DVD+R media you're using, even if it worked fine in the past. Just buy a small 5-pack or cheap spindle somewhere.

2) Uninstall/reinstall the DVD burning software.

3) Use a can of compressed air and blow out the inside of the drive (be careful to only use short blasts of air).

Ok, I am using Nero 6, always have been using it. I also tried this with Nero Recode 2 to see if it will give me the same message and it sure did. So the program probably isn't the problem.

And this is my burner.
Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R6252
Device type: DVD/CD-ROM drives
Manufacturer: Standard CD-ROM drives
Location: Location 0 (0)

Also I just ran Neroinfotool and sure enough DVD+R was checked off as is DVD+RW. So cleary I should be able to use DVD+R but can't now.

OK, first of all, burning from NeroVision, Nero Recode, or Nero Burning ROM is all part of the same application. All 3 read the disc using Nero's Disc Info utility. So to say you tried a second app is not exactly true.

I know it's a pain, but I highly recommend you uninstall Nero completely. Remove all components and reboot. Reinstall it after rebooting. I realize you've gotten a new hard drive recently, but did you start from scratch installing Windows, then installing each application one at a time? Or, did you use the hard drive utility that copied data from your old drive to the new one? If you did the copy, then Nero could still be corrupted from before, and you need to definitely make sure you try this suggestion.

If you still have problems, go out to Toshiba's website. Look up the model of your laptop. There might be a firmware update available for your DVD burner that you can apply. Sometimes that helps.

These threads in another forum show that the problem you're having is pretty common with that drive:

Can you read DVD/Rs that you previously burnt?
