After changing the hostname on a Linux Red Hat Enterprise 4 server it will no longer boot up... it just hangs at "enabling swap space". I'm guessing the services cannot start at this point because of some problem with the hostname. I have tried using the install disk to boot from that and fix the issue but no luck. How can I fix this? I assume I need to get to the /etc/hosts file and change it there??

Sometimes systems can pause for quite a long time at that point... how long have you waited?

First impressions are that it's unlikely to be related to the host name. How exactly did you go about changing it? Had the system been rebooted recently before you did?

I agree on being patient for a long pause.
I also agree that changing a hostname setting should not lead to a failure to boot.

i've waited up to 30 minutes and nothing... it just hangs there.

the linux support persons suggests that i edit the fstba file and remove the line referencing swap. trying that now.

is there an easy way to reinstall the linux system files and leave everything else intact? i was there is a way to do that. i have a feeling something might be corrupt.

Try booting off the CD again and editing the /etc/rc.sysinit script (this is the one that enables swap space among other things), adding set -x somewhere near the top, then reboot off the hard drive to see exactly where it's getting stuck.
