I have a machine runing as domain server for the private network. The machine has 1 NIC and 1 external satellite modem connect through USB port. If I can run nat & domain server in same machine, do I need to install one more NIC to do the job?

Pls help.

Thx in advance

This situation is far from ideal, but no, you don't need another NIC. There are definitely some things I would make sure weren't happening on your external interface. As long as you have nearly all inbound traffic blocked, you should be fine, assuming that this is just a home network or SOHO.

It might be safer to run the satellite modem through a router. There are routers that work with modems.

Then the modem can control NAT and have a fire wall.

Based on my testing, this combination will produce unpredictable results when used on a server that has a router IP address other than the external modem connection.

This is because (as with dial-up) the server will give the new route a lower cost than the existing route and all traffic destined for other subnets will get forwarded via the modem, not via the internal router connection.

This can be solved by manually assigning a lower cost to the internal connection and assigning a higher cost the external connection interface.

If the modem is your only router address configured on the server , then you should be OK.
