I can map a drive on a remote computer, but I cannot ping that remote computer. Pings just time out. I have 2 computers mapping this remote drive. One can ping fine and the other cannot. The TCP/IP properties appear identical.

Can somebody offer advice why this is happening?

is this remote computer on the same LAN?

They are not on the same subnet.

The remote computer is 10.10.185.253

The local computers are 10.10.184.31 and 10.10.184.32

32 cannot ping but 31 can. Both can map the remote drive.

Also, the remote computer can ping both 31 and 32. There is no firewall unless it's built into the router.

what type of router are you using?

are you running access lists on the router?

No access lists.

I tried reversing the IP addresses of 31 and 32. Didn't help. The same box still can't ping regardless of it's IP address.

I guess it's not a big deal since we can map the drive and get to the file share. Just seems strange we can't ping.
