I've heard several opinions on this and would like a straight forward answer before I go throw money away on books i don't need?

Basically, what I need are the same functions of NIS (i.e. user maint, etc) but NIS doesn't seem to go well for me when it comes to switching to slave.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes you can manage in LDAP all host files that you manage with NIS/NIS+, even if you have a machine by that some reason cannot change now to a LDAP client you can use LDAP to mantain NIS/NIS+ maps, also LDAP security model is vastly superior than NIS/NIS+, LDAP is also more performant, you can also use LDAP for authentication with CRAM-MD5 or kerberos encryption, Solaris 9 will have iPlanet LDAP Server in Solaris distribution...

Hope it helps,

Carlos Almeida,
