Can JS prevent refresh/reload of unchanged page?

Total newbie here...Have website with one page that is/gets quite large (guestbook postings)...is there a way in JS to block re-downloading when user does F5 or similar (with all that overhead) if the page has not been updated by someone else in the meantime?
