Can Java dial via a modem?

I am migrating my database platform and my current solution can dial a phone number from within the application. The new solution is written in Java and supports pluggins and beans. I can find modem dialers for windoz, but we are cross platform Windoz and Mac OSX.Can Java dial through a modem or serial port? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The javax.comm package can allow you to do this :
