Hey all,

Is there an install option to get TFTP setup on a Windows 2003 server? With my Windows 2000 servers I was able to get a TFTP server setup by installing RIS. I tried installing RIS on my Windows 2003 servers and none of them will work with TFTP. I was in over the weekend downloading new firmware to my ProCurve switches and I had to use a TFTP program on one of my workstations. I was getting upset until I found out I have to actually RUN the TFTP program on the workstation (I thought it would be a service). I'd like to have a server running TFTP so I can do TFTP work without having to remember to run the program on the workstation.

Thanks,

Joe B

itsp1965, thanks but I was hoping to stay away from third-party software.

nelifecare, I'll take a look at the link. If I can find a "stock" TFTP service that would be ideal. AND, where did you find the TFTP Windows service to run?

Thanks,

Joe B

The link I included will create the TFTPd service for you.

"instsrv tftpd %systemroot%\tftpd.exe"

Nelifecare, that was exactly what I was looking for!

Thanks!

Ok, now I have one more question--how do I give the TFTP folder the right security permissions so that my Cisco and my HP devices (switches, firewall, etc...) can access it for firmware updates and configuration backups? I've tried the following AD accounts:

ANONYMOUS LOGON
Everyone
_Web Anonymous Users
NETWORK SERVICE
SYSTEM

Thanks,

Joe B

Is the folder on the same machine as the TFTPd service? If so, you shouldn't need to change permissions. If the folder is on the network, the service account that runs the TFTPd service will need a domain account with rights to that folder.

Your Cisco and HP devices do not send credentials. The credentials are between the service account running the TFTPd server and the folder you want it to access.
