Can I use wireless network and wired network ?

I have just brought a wireless enabled laptop. 802.11g I think the spec is, I have a wireless network adsl modem router with 4 ports also available for wired Lan acces.
I want to use my Desktop via a Lan cable to access the internet. I have an old wireless dongle which is also connected to the desktop 802.11b.
I understand that the 2 are compatible all be it the speed will be reduced. I want to be able to share my printer from the desktop and some files.
I have set my SSID on the wireless router and set WEP up and can access the internet on both machince. But I cannot see any folders/files ?
I have set 1 of my hard drives as shared, the hand appears underneath the dive letter. I have allowed the network ID in my firewall. My Laptop and desktops appear in my network places on each machince. But every time a click on either computer I get unathorised error message ?
Does the SSID need to be the same as the workgroup name ?
IE SSID freds PCs, work group name freds PCs.
I have called the Laptop, Laptop and the desktop Desktop, work group as freds PCS.
Both DHCP clients.What am I missing. Both running WP sp2.
Norton internet security as the firewall.

. Workgroup names do not effect connectivity nor access priviliges; they are an organizing convenience.

. SSID can be anything you want it to be; it is independent of a Computer or Workgroup name.
