can i use the "usemap" tag for a div?

hallo,
the banner in my website is loaded as background of a div container. Now I would like to make cliccable some regions of the image, but since it is a background loaded through css I don't know how to do. I was thinking about if it possibile and correct to use the "usemap" tag for a div. If not, has someone a better suggestion? thanks
