it's more or less the same as visual basic.
I would like to retrieve information from oracle database and generate reports(accounting reports, salary reports) from the information retrieved from database.
Once you receive the data back from the database you can do whatever you would like to with it, from displaying it in a large label with tabs and linebreaks to generating labels and adding them to a component with a grid layout to placing them in a text area that understands HTML, to making them bounce around the screen randomly in their own fuschia(sorry, fuschia didn't work, had to use purple) boxes. You will need to be a little more specific as to what you are trying to do. It is possible to anything in Java that VB can do and more. It just may take more time for some things as java was not created with the aim to create simple applications quickly like VB is. Then again, you have more flexibility in Java to create your own components so in the short run it is more versatile and, as always, portable.
