Can I use DS1 modules to tie two Merlin Magix Systems together

I need to tie two merlin magix systems together. If I use two DS1 modules to connect them, will I be able to call extensions on one system from the other? We currently have tie lines, but need more capacity.

Thanks

Yes. be aware, though that certain features will not work as if it were one large system. For instance, the Attendant's DSS console will not reflect the extension status in the second system; if you have loudspeaker paging, you would need a port from the second switch to your amplifier, etc. Make sure you carefully weigh the pros & cons in this regards, as opposed to migrateing to a larger system.

Hi dmassey,
If these systems are in different buildings the cost of the T1 may decide. The systems will work well and you can share one voicemail. Note the exceptions that franke mentioned. Another solution, if the buildings are close and you have fiber between, is to use a pair of DSU's to peel out a T1 for your voice use. I assume that you have two reception positions (one on each), so the limitations are not a penalty.

As itpphoneguy guessed, our systems are in different buildings and are connected by fiber so it is no problem to get a T1 between them. We currently have separate paging systems for each building. User franke said "if you have loudspeaker paging, you would need a port from the second switch to your amplifier, etc." Can you elaborate on this a bit?

Thanks,
Derek

If your paging amp resides in Bldg A, you would need to extent a trunk port from Bldg B to Bldg A's amplifier, depending on the distance and subsequent db loss, you might need a pre-amp in Bldg B to boost the signal to Bldg A. The problem you might run into is if a person from Bldg A and a person from Bldg B tried paging at the same time.

If you have a paging amp in each building, you would need a paging trunk pair between Bldg A's amp and Bldg B's amp and the same for Bldg B to Bldg A (again with the possibility of a pre-amp at each location).

If you are using staion level paging adapters, such as Valcom, at each location, you could use a UDP extension as a feed. This would eliminate the need for any pre-amps, though you would still require two circuits between the buildings.

There are several possible ways of solving this situation, and none of them are pretty. Is there any copper between the buildings or just fiber? Are the buildings reletively close that you could install a drop between buildings with minimal expense?

if you have a analog station module ,you can use a Bogen TAM-B adapter for paging access ,wich will give you alot of options so that you will not need to run any cables

Hi DMASSEY,
I was trying to understand the question about paging between the buildings with the two phone systems. My question is can't you just access the paging via the tie trunks on the T1? Since you should have system access from the tie trunks, does this not let you key in the paging zone access code? This would eliminate having to deal with more hardware. All you would have to do is go off-hook and key in the tie trunk access code and then the paging zone code??

Let me know if this works!

Jim
