Hello,

I am new to analysis services but an very impressed with how easy it is to set up star structures, etc. It looks to me like SQL server 2000 and Analysis Services are like two separate servers. I was hoping I could create a star dimensional model database using Analysis Services and then move it over to SQL server. I want to disconnect the model from Analysis Services because I have to install my datawarehouse on a computer that is only running SQL server and not running Analysis Services (not my idea but I have to do what the boss says).

Is this possible?

As far as I know, data and DDL can only move from SS to AS and not backwards.

jw970170,

You are correct Analysis services and SQL Server are to seperate applications. THey come bundled together for Marketing and cost purposes. The ability to develop a star schema in AS and export it to SQL Server does not exist as it is the DB that feeds analysis services table structures. If your looking for a visual way to develop your star schema you can try Visio which has the ability to do database modeling.

Also be aware that While some people that AS is free with SQL Server it is only "Free" from the server running AS, if you install SQL and AS on seperate servers both servers must be licenses accordinly.
