Can I shell out in Director?

I need to know if I can shell out an application using Director 8+.

Mainly I need to run an executable that I have on CD (locally) using Director app. I'm aiming for being able to open the program inside a window within my director program, but if thats not possible then I'll just want to open the program normally. Also If this is possible, how easy is it to send commands to that application (such as key input from user)

open "application" will open the app
if its possible to open it into a director window I don't know how, same with sending data to is
