Can I run the 5.5e client against 6.5 domain?

In a word: Yes.
In more than a word: Old clients can be run against newer agents (POA, MTA, etc). However, newer clients cannot be run on older agents.
Upgrading the server and waiting to push the new clients out is normal practice for most shops.
