Can I run a VFP application on 2008 Web Edition?

I'm looking at VM'ing my web app's based on VFP and they have simple 'servicing' programs (in VFP) to look after them.

The standard set-up from my ISP is to provide 2008 Web Edition - does anyone know if it supports the running of VFP applications on the console?

It would be quite an effort to redevelop the apps as services, easier to get the ISP to install a fuller version of Windows Server on the VM.

Any experience anyone?

In principle the 2008 console you have there is a full blown Windows 2008 without the visual Desktop.

You can run foxpro apps that have a config.fpw included with SCREEN=OFF without any visual components. Try yourself and make a simple exe and start that from the cmd prompt in a normal Windows server.

Upload the exe plus runtime files and you should be able to run it on the web edition too.

Simply gibe it a try.

Bye, Olaf.

Olaf,

I've just asked the ISP if I can do just that - it's a VM host package, and I need to know if my apps will run in it - or whether I have to use a 'non-standard' package.

If I don't have a desktop, then they probably won't run.

Doesn't your ISP offer a test phase? Or upgrade if the smaller package won't work?

In both cases what's running is Win2008, it's just a matter of the remote access you have. You can do things much easier via remote desktop access.

Otherwise even if you just had FTP access to a windows server, all you need to do is upload a vfp compiled exe and the runtime files including c runtime, and it will work, you just need to be able to start it somehow. I suppose the console you have to manage your server will allow starting something.

Bye, Olaf.

I've ordered a months trial, they won't let me have a test phase - as they are happy to work in months anyway and it's pretty inexpensive.
