can i retrieve deleted emails

I have an Exchnage 2000 server.
Can I get back emails that the user has deleted from his deleted items without going back to tape.
How do I turn on the deleted itmes retension.
Will this help if the user manually deletes them from deleted items
im using backup exec & exchange agent

from the user side in outlook, while in the deleted items container, choose tools--> recover deleted items. a box will pop up with items that have been deleted and not yet purged from the server.

from the server system manager interface, expand server group, the server name, the storage group, right click the mailbox store, chose limits. this is where you will set the retention time limits.
