Hi all!
I just want to find out if I can put my newly created database by mySQL called myDatabase (folder) containing (.FRM .FYI FYD files) originally stored in "C:\mysql\Data" into different directory then originally it was put by mysql? Can I put my database into some other directory than the default directory?

for example I would like to store my database (myDatabase folder containing .FRM .FYI .FYD files) on C: or D: drive in folder called myDBs. Can I do that?

The reason why I ask is because I want to ask these people who will host my website for me to store my database (.fyi .fyd .frm)into my home directory so that I can download the folder with these files and update the dabase eg. deleting some records from tables and upload teh newly modified database myself at any time without asking them to get an access to some restrivted area.

The second question is if I can somehow convert these files (.FRM FYI FYD) once downloaded from web into some readbale format like .txt or best .csv so I can then import it into MS Access or Excel and modify it without any dabase connection? or maybe they are some tools working on standalone machine which will convert it for me simply by importing these files and save them as one .csv or .txt file?

Thank you in advance! :)

yes you can, check out the docs for using the --datadir startup option :) ______________________________________________________________________

according to the info i have, it is not possible to store databases into different directories - there is only one datadir for the mysql server - when the hosted site stores it's databases in e.g. /usr/local/mysql/data, i'm sure u cannot have your database files in your home dir
there are other ways for uploading your data as copy the whole database dir

on linux/unix machines maybe doing a sym(hard)link in the mysql datadir could solve that, but i have not tested it yet

and to your sec. prob - use the mysqldump tool, it's in the bin dir of mysql install (but i'm not sure if it's in the win build of mysql)

Hard links work btw :) ______________________________________________________________________
