Can I open a port on a PIX firewall by adding it to an object group 1

Hi All,
Our primary Cisco Guy is out on vacation newbie responsable for mnor change this week. Need to add a port to firewall (Pix). Would like to add the port to a current object group that has an ACL that defines the allowable inbound ports.. One other question can someone explain way the PIX does not support SFTP inbound? I understand that the PIX does not decrypt and therefore canot read the packet header information and therfore drops the package wasn't sure if this is correct.
