Hi there,

We have an operations database on networked drive (S driver).

Multiple user can access the database but when a user wants to make a change to the database design he has to make sure all users using the database have their closed.

Is that a limitation of access? I tried to open in exclusive mode but it does not work?

Thanks.

You need a front-end and back-end. Design changes are made to the front-end which is then rolled out to each user.

We have a have a front-end and a back-end and I am making changes to the front-end.

What I described in previous thread is a limitation of Access?

It should be possible to change the front-end without affecting any of the users. If you are changing the back-end, you will need to have the users out of the system. I would not exactly call it a limitation, more a safety measure.

BTW, each user should have a local copy of the FE.

Hope This Helps, PH.

FWIW, assuming you follow PHV's advice ("each user should have a local copy of the FE"), this can actually make your job easier.

I keep a record of the application's version number in the BE. When a user first opens their local copy of the FE, it's version is checked against that in the BE.

If it's higher (ie they're the first to use an updated version of your app), the BE version is updated to that.

If it's lower, the user is advised that they need to download the latest version of the FE, which you could store in the same network folder as the BE.

Has worked well for me.
