I have given a project by my employer to locate a hundred or so laptops that are somewhere in the organisation - they could be at any number of locations around the UK!!

The only details I have are a list of MAC addresses.

I am hoping there's a tool which will allow me to connect via the MAC address, and obtain IP address/computername (a bit like nbtstat in reverse, I guess).

does anybody know if this can be done easily (and without buying any expensive software)

This is easy if you have Cisco gear.

Do a Show cam [MAC Address] on your switch. This'll tell you what port the machine is on.

Do sh ip arp [MAC] on your (first upstream) router and this will tell you the IP.

Of course if the machines are all over the country, you may have to repeat this quite a number of times.
