can i install linux to PC along with my window &Dos?

hello!
i am very new to computer...i want to install linux to my pc but how does it work? does linux replace my window and dos? does it have its own window & linux screen?
or is it like installing MS-office and you can click on the icon to get into the linux from your window?
i read some of threads posted here and sounded it causes problem to your PC?

what linux can i install, redHat or etc? does it matter which one i install?

can you recommend me one?

can you tell me a few websites i can download this free?

It's going to take you awhile to get it installed. read through the install docs and post specific questions you have.
