At work, I have limited access to 10g and use some PL/SQL, but do not have create, replace or update rights. I need to learn so I am thinking of installing 9i Personal on my work PC drive C. I need to avoid any potential conflict while I learn. Would this mess up my 10g access? Thank you in advance for any suggestions and advice.

Hi,
Since all the Workstation has are client tools, you should be able to install 9i on your same PC as long as you make sure it creates a separate home ( the Installer should take care of that , but be watchful) and you have enough disk space and RAM to make hosting a database practical.
One thought, though:
Why 9i, instead of 10G,if the 'production' database is 10G.There may be differences in coding methods between versions that may cause you to miss something about 10g's capabilities..

Thank you. Got it 10xe, but no home machine with XP Pro and mem resources so I'm going to install it on my work PC and hope it doesn't foul my work config.

Actually, you can also run XE on a windows 2000 machine as long as it has service pack 4. I have it on that configuration and it is totally stable. I am also connecting to Oracle 8i, 9i, 10g from the same machine with no problems. Oracle XE is one of the easiest installs oracle has ever had. Run the installer, answer 2 questions and you are up. If you want to uninstall, simply use windows "add & remove programs" and it is totally gone.

Thank you again, Beilstwh. Based on your second comment about the simplicity of uninstall, I decided to try an install Oracle 10EX on my home PC where I know I'd have time to learn. It's a Dell E310 with XP Home (Oracle recommends PRO) SP2 and 512 RAM. The install went smooooth and with a little experimenting, it's a (so far) very stable package that will help me greatly. Many thanks.
