Ok, i am a newbie to Indesign, i have been using illustrator CS3. I have produced a 120 page catalog in illustrator!!!! I know... But i did not know about IN DESIGN.
The catalog is now finished and going to print. So.. can i use these original files (AI) and import them into ID and continue building the catalog, without creating to much work for myself??? I would appreciate any help on this guys. Thanx

Absolutely.

You can place files, FILE>PLACE, but you won't be able to edit them. Images are just thumbnail representations of the file, so they are uneditable. You will need to go to VIEW>DISPLAY PERFORMANCE>HIGH QUALITY, to view the detail in your images, otherwise they are lo-res previews, keep in mind it's no the actual image itself.

But you can copy and paste, or drag the object(s), including text, from Illustrator straight into InDesign, and these are completely editable.

Fair play for doing all that work in Illustrator! Well done.

Thanx eugenetyson, i can breathe again now!! So if i drag all files over to ID can i put these pages into the book format and continue with the new pages all in the same book?? Does this make sense!

Just create a new Indesign doc with as many pages as you need. Then drag the AIs into each page. If you need more pages, you can add them via the Pages window in Indesign, or subtract if you wish.

When done with the Indesign doc, it's often easiest to
package (File menu). That will give you one folder with the INDD, all the AIs, and a copy of fonts used. Just makes it easier to find things if you have to make chnages later.

Yup jmgalvin rapped it up there, you are flying with these tips. If need anything again just post it I'm sure myself and jmgalvin will be around to answer questions as often as possible. Good luck with the book.
