Can I 'image' HD from laptop to external drive via USB/Firewire?

I wish to make a backup copy of the HD on my Sony Vaio Laptop to an external HD and would prefer a restorable "Ghosted " image or copy, however inspite of having Norton Ghost 2003 I cannot make it work via a USB 1.1 connection. I have read various Symantec knowledge base articles but they make it so complicated and suggest even the make of cable is critical!

Has anybod had experience of any other programs that can perform this feat? Perhaps Dtivecopy 4.0?

Try Acronis True Image. It worked with my USB external drive.
